【解説トーク】シューマン『子供の情景』第4曲「おねだり」：魔法のペダル「モデレーター」で描く追憶（レミニセンス）の色彩｜Schumann Kinderszenen 4: “Bittendes Kind”

『Invisible Theater（見えない劇場）』シリーズ、本編レコーディングの第4回目は、ロベルト・シューマンの『子供の情景（Kinderszenen）作品15』より、第4曲「おねだり（Bittendes Kind）」をお届けします。
今回もタカギクラヴィア株式会社様が所蔵する歴史的フォルテピアノ「ヨハン・クレーマー（Johann Krämer）」（1825年ウィーン製、430Hz）の響きと共に、深い精神の旅へとご案内します。

■ 目の前の風景ではなく「追憶（レミニセンス）」として弾く
ドイツ語の「Bitte（ビッテ）」は、英語の「Please（お願い）」を意味します。このタイトルを聞くと、スーパーマーケットでお母さんに「あぁ、ビッテ！買って！」とおねだりしている子供の姿を想像するかもしれません。
しかし、この曲を演奏するのは非常に困難です。なぜなら、これは「今、目の前で起きている出来事」を音にしているのではなく、私自身が人生におけるその瞬間を思い出す「追憶（Reminiscence）」だからです。

■ 魔法のペダル「モデレーター」がもたらす特別な色彩
「今ここにある音」ではなく「追憶」を表現するために、私はこの1825年製フォルテピアノに備わっている4つのペダルのうち、「モデレーター」と呼ばれるペダルを使用しました。
通常のピアノはハンマーが直接弦を叩いて音を出しますが、このペダルを踏むと、ハンマーと弦の間に「フェルト」が入り込みます。その結果、ベールに包まれたような、非常に柔らかくメローな、まったく違う次元の響きが生まれるのです。時には片足で2つのペダルを同時に踏み込み、色彩のコントラストを作り出しています。

■ 今だけの「特別な瞬間」を選ぶスリリングな旅
私がオランダのデン・ハーグでフォルテピアノを学んでいた時にも強く感じたことですが、このような歴史的楽器の特殊なペダルは、常に使い続けて良いものではありません。
それは例えるなら、「常に強すぎるコーヒーを飲み続ける」ようなもの、あるいは常に心臓マッサージをし続けるような不自然さがあります。
モデレーター・ペダルは、ここぞという「特別な瞬間」のために選ばれるべきものです。音楽の中にいるその瞬間に、楽器と私が共に表現したい色彩を即座に選び取る。そのスリリングな一瞬の選択を、ぜひ皆さんも一緒に体験してください。

■ [Essay] Schumann’s “Bittendes Kind”: Painting Reminiscence with the Magical Moderator Pedal

For the fourth installment of our Invisible Theater recording series, we present No. 4, “Bittendes Kind” (Pleading Child), from Robert Schumann’s Kinderszenen Op. 15.
Once again, we invite you on a profound spiritual journey accompanied by the tones of the historical 1825 Johann Krämer fortepiano (Vienna; 80 keys, 4 pedals, 430Hz) from the Takagi Klavier collection.

■ Playing as a “Reminiscence” Rather Than a Present Event
The German word “Bitte” translates to “please” in English. Hearing this title, one might easily imagine a child in a supermarket begging their mother, “Ah, bitte! Please buy this!”
However, performing this piece is exceptionally difficult. This is because the music does not depict an event happening right in front of our eyes; rather, it is a “reminiscence”—a moment of recalling that specific feeling from my own life.

■ The Special Colors Brought by the Magical “Moderator” Pedal
To express this “reminiscence” instead of a “present sound,” I utilized the “Moderator” pedal, one of the four pedals available on this 1825 fortepiano.
While a piano typically produces sound by hammers striking the strings directly, pressing this pedal inserts a layer of felt between the hammer and the strings. As a result, it creates a completely different dimension of resonance—a beautifully veiled, soft, and mellow sound. At times, I even press two pedals simultaneously with one foot to create a vivid contrast of colors.

■ A Thrilling Journey of Choosing the “Special Moment”
As I strongly realized during my fortepiano studies in The Hague, the Netherlands, one cannot use these special pedals on historical instruments constantly.
It would be like constantly drinking coffee that is too strong, or unnaturally applying CPR all the time.
The Moderator pedal must be reserved for truly “special moments.” In the very moment I am inside the music, I must instantly choose the color that both the instrument and I wish to express. I invite you to experience this thrilling, instantaneous choice with me.
