ステンドグラスから降り注ぐ「クリスタルの光」

この曲は、「小さなトト」について書かれた作品です 。

彼は自分を変身させてみたかったようで、教会の牧師になってみたかったという情景が描かれています 。

この作品は非常にゆっくりとしたテンポです 。私は教会の窓のステンドグラスをこの曲を弾きながら想像しました 。そこから光が見え、クリスタルのような光や、ステンドグラスから実際にたくさんの光が注がれるのを感じられました 。

モダンの濁りと、フォルテピアノが重ねる「音の層」

では、この目に見えない「光」を、音楽でどのように表現するのでしょうか。その秘密は「ペダル」にあります。

もし、このペダルの指示でモダンのピアノを弾くと、共鳴しすぎるのかもしれません 。

もちろん、ペダルをしっかり踏み替えると確かに響きをクリアにすることはできます 。 しかし、1825年生まれのこの木製のフォルテピアノは違います 。このフォルテピアノでペダルをずっと踏んだまま弾いてみると、たぶん印象が変わったと思いますが、音が濁るのではなく、ペダルを踏んだままにすることでこのフォルテピアノではどんどんと音の層を追加できるのです。

この楽器だからこそ生み出せる「音の層」の重なりこそが、ステンドグラスを通した幾重もの光のきらめきとなって空間を満たします。これが美しさの一つだと思いますし、それが今日この楽器を選んだ理由です 。この作品も楽しんで頂ければ幸いです 。

Hello everyone, this is Megumi Tanno. Today, I am performing Déodat de Séverac’s “Toto déguisé en Suisse d’église” (Toto Disguised as a Church Swiss Guard) from his suite En Vacances, Book 1.

Crystal Light Pouring Through Stained Glass

This piece is about “little Toto”. He wanted to transform himself, specifically wishing to become a church pastor. The piece features a very slow tempo. As I played this piece, I imagined the stained glass windows of a church. I could see the light, and I felt crystal-like light and many rays actually pouring down from the stained glass.

Modern Resonance vs. Fortepiano’s “Layers of Sound”

How do we express this visual “light” through music? The secret lies in the pedal.

If you play a modern piano with these pedal instructions, it might resonate too much. While you can certainly make the sound clear by firmly changing the pedal, that would alter the intended resonance. However, this wooden fortepiano was born in 1825. If you play while keeping the pedal completely pressed down on this fortepiano, your impression likely changes. By keeping the pedal down, you can continuously add layers of sound on this fortepiano.

This ability to beautifully layer sound is one of its beauties, and that is exactly the reason why I chose this instrument today.
