【第3弾】幻の大曲に挑む。シューベルト『英雄的大行進曲』と1830年製ローゼンベルガーの咆哮

新シリーズ【ファンタジーとダンスが交差する「シューベルトの森」】も、いよいよ大きな山場を迎えます。
今回は、ミヒャエル・ツァルカ教授との四手連弾により、コンサートで演奏されることや録音される機会が非常に稀な大曲「連弾による英雄的大行進曲 イ短調」をお届けいたします。

 

■ ベートーヴェンとは異なる、シューベルトの「英雄」の形

「英雄的（Héroïque）」な行進曲といえば、ベートーヴェンの交響曲第3番『エロイカ』に代表されるように、華やかで堂々とした「変ホ長調」で書かれるのが当時の一般的でした。
しかし、ロシア皇帝ニコライ1世に献呈されたこの壮大な連弾曲は、非常にドラマチックで悲劇的な「イ短調」で書かれています。

動画の後半（14:46〜）のトークセクションでツァルカ博士が解説しているように、この「イ短調」という調性は、ピアノ・ソナタ（D.845）や『アルペジョーネ・ソナタ』、そして『人生の嵐』などと共通する、まさに「後期シューベルト」を象徴する深い色彩を持っています。
戦闘に向かうような威厳と緊張感に満ちた第1主題から一転し、中間部ではまるで天使がはるか高い空を飛翔し、優しく歌いかけるような美しい叙情性（カンタービレ）が現れます。この強烈な「二面性」のドラマこそが、最晩年のシューベルトが到達した真髄と言えるでしょう。

 

■ ライオンのように吠える1830年製フォルテピアノ

そして、この途方もないスケールの楽曲を支えるのが、ベヒシュタイン・ジャパンが所有する1830年頃製作のオリジナル・フォルテピアノ「ローゼンベルガー」です。
今回は調律師の野中絵里氏によって完璧な状態に仕上げられており、ツァルカ博士も「この豪華で頑丈な、まるでライオンのような楽器は、最強音（フォルテ・フォルティッシモ）を極めて美しく表現できる」と絶賛していました。

歴史的楽器が限界まで共鳴し、空間の空気を震わせる圧倒的な迫力と、天上の美しさ。
時空を超えて蘇る、幻の大曲の全貌をどうぞごゆっくりお楽しみください。

[Episode 3] Taking on a Rare Masterpiece: Schubert’s “Grande Marche Héroïque” and the Roar of the 1830 Rosenberger

Hello everyone, I am Megumi Tanno.

Our series, Forest of Dreams: Fantasies and Dances by Franz Schubert, is now reaching a major pinnacle.
Today, together with Professor Michael Tsalka, I am thrilled to present a true rarity: Schubert’s “Grande Marche Héroïque” in A minor for piano four hands, a magnificent masterpiece that is very rarely performed or recorded.

 

■ Schubert’s Unique Vision of a “Hero”

When we think of “heroic” works in classical music, we often expect the bright and majestic key of E-flat major, much like Beethoven’s Eroica Symphony.
However, this grand four-hand piece, dedicated to Russian Emperor Nikolai I, is remarkably written in the dramatic and profound key of A minor.

As Dr. Tsalka explains in our talk session (starting at 14:46 in the video), A minor is a defining key of “Late Schubert.” It shares the intensive colors and deep lyricism found in his Sonata D.845, the Arpeggione Sonata, and “Lebensstürme.”
The piece presents a striking duality: it opens with a highly militaristic, combat-ready first theme, which then transitions into a breathtakingly beautiful cantabile—as if an angel is singing and soaring high in the skies. This profound contrast is the very essence of Schubert’s final years.

 

■ The “Lion-Like” 1830 Fortepiano

Supporting this monumental work is a gorgeous original Rosenberger fortepiano, built around 1830 and currently owned by Bechstein Japan.
Beautifully maintained and tuned by Eri Nonaka, the instrument was highly praised by Dr. Tsalka. He described it as a “sturdy, lion-like” instrument, capable of portraying roaring forte-fortissimo expressions with absolute beauty.
