【最高峰の連弾曲】シューベルト『幻想曲 ヘ短調』〜1830年製ローゼンベルガーで紡ぐ「真の対話」と西洋芸術の真髄

ミヒャエル・ツァルカ教授をお迎えしてお届けしてきた新シリーズ【ファンタジーとダンスが交差する「シューベルトの森」】が、いよいよ本日、（演奏本編の）感動の最終回を迎えます。

シリーズの集大成を飾るのは、ピアノの歴史における四手連弾（カトルマン）作品の中で、最も重要な傑作の一つであるシューベルトの『幻想曲（ファンタジー）ヘ短調 D.940』です。

■ 歌を歌うと哀しみになり、哀しみを歌うとまた歌になる

1828年、シューベルトが亡くなる最晩年に最愛の教え子へと献呈されたこの作品は、哀愁を帯びたあまりにも美しい主題から始まります。
「歌曲王」と呼ばれるシューベルトの音楽の根底には、常に「歌（リート）」と「踊り」が存在しています。本番直後の熱気が残る動画後半（19:22〜）の対談トークでもお話ししたように、彼の音楽は「歌を歌うと哀しみになり、哀しみを歌うとまた歌になる」という、人間の心を極限まで歌い上げたドラマそのものです。

今回、ベヒシュタイン・ジャパンが用意してくださった1830年製のオリジナル・フォルテピアノ「ローゼンベルガー」は、そのウィーン式アクション特有の香りと豊かな個性を放ち、シューベルトの楽譜に書かれた意図や、繊細なニュアンスを驚くほど克明に呼び起こしてくれました。

■ 演奏中に生まれる「空間（スペース）」と真の対話（Gespräch）

今回のレコーディング中、四手連弾というアートフォームの真髄を感じる非常に特別な瞬間がありました。
フォルテピアノは現代のピアノよりも音域（コンパス）が狭いため、2人の演奏者は物理的にとても近い距離で弾くことになります。最後のテイクの際、私の右手とツァルカ教授の左手が激しく交差する難所で、ぶつかりそうになった瞬間がありました。
しかし2回目に同じメロディーが訪れたとき、教授は本番の最中であるにもかかわらず、瞬時に左手の運指（フィンガリング）を変えて、私に弾くための「空間（スペース）」を譲ってくださったのです。

練習ではなく、本番の響きの中でお互いの音を完璧に聴き合い、即座に適応する。これこそが、ドイツ語で言うところの「Gespräch（対話）」であり、お互いを思いやり、相手を高めることで自分自身もより良くなっていくという、最高にヒューマニスティックな経験でした。

■ 美と知性を保存するための戦い

対談の中でツァルカ教授が語ってくれた「私たちは美しい記憶を保存し、これらの古い楽器に再び命を吹き込んでいる。それは、今の世界で失われつつある美や知性、そして西洋文化を保存するために戦い続けることでもある」という言葉は、私の心に深く刺さりました。

[Grand Finale] Schubert’s “Fantasy in F minor” — “True Conversation” on the 1830 Rosenberger and the Essence of Western Art

Our series, Forest of Dreams: Fantasies and Dances by Franz Schubert, featuring the wonderful Professor Michael Tsalka, finally reaches its grand finale today.

To conclude this journey, we present one of the most monumental masterpieces for piano four hands (quatre-mains) in history: Schubert’s Fantasy in F minor, D. 940.

■ A Song Becomes Sadness, and Sadness Turns Back into Song

Composed in 1828 during the final months of Schubert’s life and dedicated to his beloved pupil, this grand work opens with an unforgettably melancholic and beautiful theme.
As the “King of Lied,” Schubert’s musical foundation is always deeply rooted in “song” and “dance.” In our talk session following the performance (from 19:22), we discuss how his music embodies the ultimate emotional cycle: “when he sings, it becomes sadness, and when he sings of sadness, it turns back into song.”

The original 1830 Rosenberger fortepiano, generously provided by Bechstein Japan and meticulously prepared by tuner Eri Nonaka, offered the perfect Viennese action and unique character. This historical instrument beautifully unveiled the true intentions and subtle nuances embedded within Schubert’s notation.

■ Sharing “Space” in Performance: The Art of True Conversation (Gespräch)

During this recording, we experienced a genuinely magical moment that captures the essence of piano duets.
Because the compass of a fortepiano is smaller than that of a modern piano, the two performers must play in very close physical proximity. In the final take, during a highly complex section where my right hand and Professor Tsalka’s left hand crossed, we almost touched. Remarkably, when the melody returned the second time, Michael instantly altered his left-hand fingering mid-performance to gracefully grant me the physical “space” needed to execute the difficult double thirds.

To listen so intensely and adapt in real-time—not during practice, but in the midst of a live performance—is what we call a true “Gespräch” (conversation) in German. It is a profoundly humanistic experience where by elevating your partner, you elevate yourself.

■ A Worthwhile Fight to Preserve Beauty and Intellect

During our discussion, Professor Tsalka shared a message that deeply resonated with me: “We are conserving beautiful memories and bringing back to life those instruments, but also we are conserving Western culture, beauty, and intellect… We have to continue and fight to preserve that.”
