The Invisible Theater: “Fast zu ernst” — The Mystery of G# Minor and the Tug-of-War Between Forward and Backward Energies
Hello everyone, I am Megumi Tanno.
Continuing our Invisible Theater series exploring the profound spiritual world of Schumann’s Kinderszenen, we now present the tenth piece, “Fast zu ernst” (Almost Too Serious).
■ An Unexpected Shift and the Rare Key of G# Minor
Following the C major of the previous pieces, we encounter a completely unexpected shift to G# minor. While Romantic composers like Schumann, Clara, and Mendelssohn frequently used G minor, the key of G# minor is exceptionally rare; one might only recall Bach’s Well-Tempered Clavier utilizing it in such a profound way.
■ The Inner Connection Uniting All 13 Pieces
As I studied deeper, I realized a crucial fact: this work is not merely a collection of pieces gathered around the famous “Träumerei,” but rather a completely united entity where all 13 pieces are strongly connected. Schumann did not choose this key out of nowhere. His genius ear heard an absolute, internal harmonic connection descending chromatically or via diminished chords from C major to G# minor.
■ The Tension of the Doppelgänger Tug-of-War
Furthermore, the “Doppelgänger” element we discussed previously appears again in this piece.
While there is a beautiful, forward-moving flow of energy—indicated by the ritardando at the end of the phrase, requiring a beautiful flow to the very end—there is also another self pulling backward, much like a tug-of-war. One moves forward, while the other holds back. The tension born between this forward and backward energy is the true essence of this piece.
Please enjoy Schumann’s intricate and delicate psychological game, brought to life through the exquisite sounds of the 1825 Viennese fortepiano.
