The Invisible Theater: “Kind im Einschlummern” — The Unresolved A Minor Ending and the German Doppelgänger Addressing the Self as “Du”

Hello everyone, I am Megumi Tanno.

Our Invisible Theater series, exploring the profound spiritual world of Schumann’s Kinderszenen, is now down to its final two pieces. Today, we invite you into the world of the twelfth piece, “Kind im Einschlummern” (Child Falling Asleep).

■ The Waves of Sleep and the Unexpected, Unresolved A Minor Ending

When we fall asleep, the depth of our slumber is not constant. It fluctuates like waves, wandering somewhere, returning to reality, and drifting back into dreams.

Schumann masterfully expressed this fluctuation of slumber in his music. Starting in E minor and shifting to E major, the piece builds an expectation to conclude in E minor. However, at the very end, he intentionally finishes in A minor. This unresolved, fading conclusion serves as a crucial and very special bridge to the final piece, “Der Dichter spricht”.

■ Addressing the Inner Self as “Du”: A Cultural Perspective

To deeply understand this piece, the element of the “Doppelgänger” (the inner other self) is absolutely essential.

Shortly after returning from my concerts in the Netherlands, I had the opportunity to converse with Professor Hiroaki Sekiguchi of Meiji University, where I learned a fascinating difference between Japanese and German cultures. For example, when in a hurry, Japanese people think “I must run,” whereas in German culture, one speaks to oneself saying, “You (Du), hurry!”.

While Japanese people use “I” as the subject, Germans address their inner self using “You” (Du).

■ The Intimate Doppelgänger Guiding Schumann

This psychological background is highly significant in interpreting Schumann’s music. As many know, Schumann constantly conversed with the multiple personalities within himself, such as Florestan and Eusebius.

The “shadow” hovering in this piece is by no means negative. It is not merely a stranger; it is a precious inner existence that converses with and often guides the self. Please enjoy this intimate and special inner dialogue within a slumber, woven by the warm resonance of the 1825 Viennese fortepiano.
