Hello everyone, I’m keyboardist Megumi Tanno.
Welcome to another episode of my documentary series, “Where Music is Born.”
In this episode, we continue our special interview with Danish clarinetist and composer Jens Vraa, who visited me in Basel, Switzerland. We delve deep into the profound encounters that have shaped his career, the untold stories behind his masterpieces, and how a composer draws inspiration from nature and city life.
Jens’s first meeting with our mutual friend, historical keyboardist Michael Tsalka, took place in 2013 on the Greek island of Crete.
At the time, Jens had composed “Five Songs about Death”—a piece written in five different languages (German, Danish, Spanish, English, and French) for a Danish tenor—which was being performed at a chamber music festival there. Right after a lunchtime concert, Jens spoke with Michael for the first time. “Within the first five to ten minutes, we had already arranged that I should compose something for him,” Jens recalls. It is a beautiful anecdote that illustrates how intuitive musical bonds can quickly blossom into magnificent cross-border projects.
In 2016, Jens composed “Le Pont de Paris” (The Bridges of Paris), a piano four-hands piece specifically for Michael and me. There is an astonishing secret behind the composition of this work.
Jens usually starts composing by finding harmonies and chords before the melody. However, when writing the middle section of this piece, a specific “melody” exceptionally came to his mind first. The melody was in 3/4 time, but he had already written the first 20 or 30 bars in 4/4 time. To accommodate this beautiful melody, he completely rewrote the entire first section into 3/4 time!
“I write wherever the music takes me, and make the conclusion at the end,” Jens explains. His flexible approach of placing no limitations and simply following the music’s inherent vitality is what gave birth to this deeply moving masterpiece.
Standing by the beautiful Rhine River in Basel, I asked him, “Does grand nature like this inspire your compositions?”
His answer was incredibly candid and fascinating. “If I go home and start thinking about the river, I would feel limited. I just enjoy it, feel relaxed and comfortable, and then I can go back,” he said.
Having grown up on the Danish coast, with the beach and the woods just a few minutes away, nature has always been a “natural given” to him. That is why he feels a certain panic when isolated in nature—like waiting for a ferry on an island—and prefers the city, where people interact. This deeply resonated with my own experience in 2015 when I first moved to Riehen (a nature-rich village in Switzerland) and initially felt panicked by the overwhelming silence.
“Danish people are very relaxed, down-to-earth, and have a sense of humor,” Jens notes, analyzing his own culture’s mentality.
During our 2017 concert in Copenhagen, music from diverse backgrounds—Denmark, Japan, and Israel (pieces brought by Michael)—intersected. Regardless of nationality or language, music serves as a “bridge” that heals our hearts and fosters profound dialogue.
