Hello everyone, I’m keyboardist Megumi Tanno.
Welcome to another episode of my documentary series, “Where Music is Born.”
In this episode, I am thrilled to welcome my dear friend from Denmark, Jens Vraa, who visited me in Basel, Switzerland. In this first installment of a three-part interview series, we dive deep into how he first encountered music and the unique philosophy behind his compositions.
Jens started playing the clarinet at the age of eight. Surprisingly, he “didn’t even know what a clarinet was” at the time.
Suggested by his practical mother, who knew how difficult the violin could be, this instrument ultimately defined his life.
At eleven, inspired by a school musical, he began to compose. “If I read a book, it wasn’t enough; I wanted to write a book.
I had to create things myself,” he recalls. This pure, irresistible urge to create from scratch laid the foundation for his later success as a self-taught composer of beautiful chamber music.
Jens’s notable works, such as “Le Pont de Paris” and “Humoresque,” actually received their descriptive titles after the pieces were entirely finished.
He explains, “If someone asked me to compose a piece called ‘Le Pont de Paris,’ I would start overthinking and feel limited.
I write wherever the music takes me, and when it’s completed, I listen to it as an audience member and ask myself, ‘What pictures do I get?'”
His approach is also highly unique: he usually sits at the piano to find “harmonies” and chords before a melody even exists. Abstract sounds, born from deep within, crystallize into a concrete “scene” only upon completion.
This process beautifully unravels the profound mystery of a creator building something from zero.
For a wind player like Jens, “breathing” is an absolutely vital element in music. The technique of inhaling and controlling the release of air using the diaphragm directly connects to his ability to envision the “flow of air” and “phrase continuation” when composing for singers.
“It’s important to be completely relaxed, like taking a deep breath right before falling asleep,” he says. His words hold a universal truth applicable not only to playing an instrument but to all forms of expression in life.
One of the most fascinating and academic topics in our conversation was the unique acoustic structure of the clarinet. While overblowing on a flute produces a note “one octave higher,” doing so on a clarinet produces a perfect 12th (an octave plus a perfect fifth).
This “perfect fifth” is the very foundation of musical harmony (tonic and dominant).
Having physically internalized this jump since he was eight years old, Jens possesses an incredibly strong, inherent sense of “chords,” despite playing a monophonic instrument.
With its massive dynamic range—from a whispering pianissimo to wild Klezmer—the clarinet is often called the instrument “closest to the human voice.” Its warm, embracing sound seems to perfectly reflect Jens’s own deep and generous humanity.
